Irish Soda Bread
Hi there! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend. If you are looking for a savory bread recipe that doesn’t require a ton of time and preparation in the kitchen, this is the recipe for you! This recipe is highly customizable. You can keep it plain or add rosemary, onions, olives and capers like I did. Serve the bread warm with butter or jam of your choice.
Ingredients
1 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour
1 1/2 Cups Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
1/4 Teaspoon Italian Seasoning, optional
1 Teaspoon Baking Soda
1 3/4 Cups Buttermilk
1 Tablespoon Rosemary, chopped
6-7 Olives, finely chopped
1 Tablespoon, Capers
1 Small Onion, chopped
1/2 Teaspoon Butter
Process
- Preheat the oven to 400 F, line a baking sheet with foil and set aside.
- Heat the butter in a pan and saute the onions for about 5 minutes on medium low heat until they soften and start becoming translucent. Allow to cool.
- Place all the dry ingredients into a bowl and mix to combine. Add the buttermilk, cooled onions, capers and olives and mix quickly to incorporate. Do not over mix.
- Take the dough out on a floured surface and form into a round ball. Flatten the dough slightly and cut 4 slits around the sides – about 1/4 of the way into the dough.
- Place the dough on to the lined baking sheet and bake for 35 – 40 minutes. It is done when the bread is brown on the outside and gives a hollow sound when tapped.
Enjoy!
