Chicken Turnovers
April 2, 2015
I like to make simple food. These chicken turnovers are not just easy but also make for an elegant and savory snack. You can adjust the seasoning in the chicken and peas filling according to your taste. The warm and spiced seasoning is enclosed in the buttery and flaky puff pastry pockets. The crispy golden turnovers are sure to please any crowd.
Ingredients
1 Sheet of Puff Pastry, thawed
1 Pound ground chicken
1/4 Cup Frozen Green Peas
1/4 Cup Onion, finely chopped
2 Green chilies, diced
1/4 Teaspoon Sea Salt
1/4 Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cumin
1/2 Teaspoon Ground Coriander
1 Teaspoon Olive/ Vegetable Oil
2 Tablespoons Fresh Cilantro, chopped
1Egg Yolk
Egg Wash (one egg beaten with 1 tbsp of water)
Process
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees, line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- Heat the oil in a pan, add onions and green chilies and sauté for 3-4 minutes on medium-hight heat.
- Add green peas, ground chicken and salt and cook for additional 5-6 minutes. Stir in the dry spices (coriander, cumin and black pepper) and cook for additional minute or two, until all the moisture has evaporated.
- Stir in chopped cilantro. Taste the filling and adjust seasoning if needed. Set the filling aside for few minutes and let it come to room temperature.
- Dust some flour on your work surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry slightly with a rolling pin (approx. one inch on each side).
- Cut 9 squares out of the rolled puff pastry and working quickly (so it doesn’t start sticking to your work surface) dollop about 1.5 Teaspoon filling in the center of each one.
- Brush the edges of each square with the egg wash, fold one side over to seal (to form a triangle) dip a fork into some flour and seal the edges. Brush the top with the egg wash.
- Place the turnovers on the baking sheet, few inches apart and bake them for about 25 minutes or until golden brown, rotating the baking sheet half way through baking for even cooking.
- Let them cool for at least 10 minutes before serving as the insides will be very hot.
Enjoy!
